An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred on Wednesday afternoon, at 7:53 p.m. local time, in the seismic zone of Vrancea, with its epicenter in Vrancea County, at a depth of 96 kilometers, according to data published by the National Institute. of Research and Development of Physics of the Earth (INCDFP).
The earthquake took place near the following cities: 77 kilometers east of Brasov, 93 kilometers northeast of Ploiesti, 100 kilometers south of Bacau, 115 kilometers west of Galati, 117 kilometers northwest of Braila, 144 kilometers north of Bucharest, 165 kilometers northeast of Pitesti, 181 kilometers southwest of Iasi, 191 kilometers east of Sibiu, 209 kilometers north of Ruse.
In December, 23 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2 and 3.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Romania.
The strongest earthquake this year occurred on January 31, in Vrancea County, at a depth of 121 kilometers, and had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was also felt in Bucharest.
“This year was quite a moderate year, we can say even weakly as seismic activity in Romania. It was not a special activity. There was an earthquake of magnitude greater than 5 in January, but otherwise it was quite low activity for the area of Vrancea, which was very good, in the sense that I had no problems, ”seismologist Mircea Radulian said on Digi24 on Tuesday.
“But on the other hand, it is known that the Vrancea area is an active zone and, in a certain time interval, it is very possible that new earthquakes will reach us, unfortunately. We can hope for it, but it is very difficult to say exactly when this earthquake will occur and we hope it is not too soon. But we can’t neglect this either it would be best to be prepared as if it could happen at any moment. This would be ideal, from the point of view of the measures we can take, to avoid disasters such as earthquakes, ”said Mircea Radulian, principal investigator of the INFP.
