A group of gunmen killed more than 100 people in an attack in western Ethiopia on Wednesday, the Ethiopian Commission on Human Rights (ECHR) was quoted as saying by Agerpres.
The EHRC said in a statement that “more than 100 people have been shot and killed by armed men” in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.
The commission said it had received “troubling photographic evidence” from survivors of the dawn attack on “sleeping residents” in the Metekel area, which continued through Wednesday afternoon.
At least 36 wounded received medical attention at a hospital in Bulen, located about 90 kilometers from the scene of the attack, according to the cited source.
“In addition to the damage caused to people’s lives and their bodies, agricultural crops have been burned. One victim told us that he saw 18 fires, ”says EHRC.
There were no police or security forces in the area at the time of the attacks. Armed forces were dispatched to defuse tensions on Tuesday, but they soon left the area.
Some of the victims of the attack said they knew the identity of the attackers, the Commission added. He added that humanitarian aid will be sent to displaced and injured people in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.
