It is the first time that a government program no longer includes any reference to the Romanian Orthodox Church, as it happened in previous years. Furthermore, the new government no longer assumes support for the construction of the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation, a symbol of the Romanian people’s church and does not discuss the violation of religious freedom during the pandemic, confirmed by the Court’s decision. of Appeal of Bucharest of December 14, 2020.

The guiding program can be consulted HERE

This is what Cătălin Raiu, Romania’s representative on the OSCE panel of experts on religious freedom, writes in a post on Facebook:

“How did the doctrinal options in the field of #ReligiosoReligios and #Cultos finally settle in the new government program of the complicated PNL + USR-PLUS + UDRM + minorities alliance? Is the orientation more to the left or the political right, if the focus is on religious minorities or the majority Church, on historical monuments or new constructions, social or educational programs, on internal public policies or external priorities? I realized that this is the first government program that does not contain any reference to #Cultos and #ReligiousFreedom. It is a premiere in Romania after 1989, when religious freedom, which is one of the main commitments of consolidated democracies (US, UK, Germany, Italy, etc.), is simply completely missing in a document that has the function of guiding. government for the next 4 years. Even if in previous government programs, references to #religion, #cult, and #ReligiousReligion were quite early and politically incoherent compilations, they at least offered the guarantee of minimal parliamentary legitimacy to promote religious freedom.

The lack of minimum commitments in the field of religious freedom can have negative effects mainly on small religious organizations in terms of the number of members, whose protection will only be temporary and not legitimized by parliamentary consensus. #OSCE notes that the lack of predictability in the state’s interaction with religious denominations leaves room for non-transparent behind-the-scenes arrangements or a flood of public policies at odds with religious freedom. Although the European community develops and refines public policies to promote religious freedom, legislative and governmental protection of religious minorities, harmonizes pandemic health requirements with international standards, does not Romania remain in a circle of silence, danger and indifference? in the religious field? “.
