Angry truckers got into a fight with police in the British port of Dover, in the context of which they stood in huge lines on the border with France, at the English Channel crossing, waiting to reach the mainland, reports The Independent and CNN.
In the images broadcast on television and published on social networks, physical confrontations between police officers and drivers can be seen. Law enforcement tried to control angry drivers who gathered to express their frustration as they spent hours waiting to reach the mainland.
Kent police said one person had been arrested in connection with “disruptions” at Dover and a disused Manston airport used to park vehicles.
Thousands of truckers and truck drivers were stranded when the border was closed on Sunday for fear of a mutant coronavirus that had spread uncontrollably in the UK.
France, however, partially lifted travel restrictions, but required that all those who want to enter the country from the UK show a negative test on Covid-19. The big problem for the British is that there are no test centers in Dover, and the 2,800 or so drivers are now stranded in Dover. They were sent to stop at the disused Manston Airport, but the road to it is also blocked after 100 other truckers blocked the road in protest.
The British Road Transport Association said drivers were “very, very angry” that they could not be tested, were given no information about what was happening and were sent to spend time in inappropriate areas.
So far, only two trucks have managed to cross the English Channel and reach the port of Calais in France.
The current pandemic situation and the usual congestion at the end of the year are also exacerbated by Brexit, as the United Kingdom will leave the single market and the customs union on 1 January 2021 and an agreement has not yet been negotiated between the Two parts.
