Tobias Baumgaertner, a German photographer, managed to capture in Melbourne two widowed penguins who comfort each other almost every night, hugging and admiring the view of the city. The photo was chosen as the winner in the Ocean Photography Awards 2020 competition, reports the BBC.
The two penguins are part of the St. Kilda Pier in Melbourne, Australia, along with 1,400 other little penguins. This is the waist of the smallest penguin, the maximum height is 33 cm. The colony is monitored by volunteers.
“One of the volunteers contacted me and told me that the white penguin is an elderly female who has lost her mate and it seems the same thing happened in the case of the male.
Since then, the two penguins have met almost every day, hugging and looking at the lights and the hustle and bustle of the city for hours, ”said photographer Tobias Baumgaertner on his Instagram page.
It was not easy for the photographer to capture the moment that went viral on the Internet. He spent three nights watching the penguins, until he managed to take the perfect photo.
“It just came to our notice then. In addition to not being allowed to use artificial light in the competition, the two penguins continuously moved, stroked each other’s back, and washed each other. However, I was lucky enough to capture a beautiful moment ”Added the photographer.
