PetroChina, Asia’s largest oil and gas producer, has announced the discovery of a huge natural gas field in the Xinjiang region of northwest China, with estimated reserves in excess of 100 billion cubic meters, Reuters and Xinhua reported. according to Agerpres.
Preliminary data shows that the field, which covers an area of 156 million square meters in the center of the southern coast of the Junggar basin, contains 109 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Near the discovered deposit, PetroChina is carrying out drilling work at the Letan 1, Tianwan 1 and Tianan-1 exploration wells.
It is a major new discovery in the region for PetroChina, after a similar-sized deposit was discovered in the Tarim basin in September 2019.

PetroChina has pledged to spend 150 billion yuan ($ 22.9 billion) in Xinjiang between 2018 and 2020 to increase total oil and gas production to one million barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The Uighurs are the main ethnic group in Xinjiang, a huge region of China that shares borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Regularly battered by bloody attacks attributed by Beijing to Uighur or Islamist separatists, the region is under high police surveillance.
More than a million people, mostly Muslims, have been interned in “camps”, say human rights groups. However, China claims that these are “training centers” designed to help people find a job and thus stay away from religious extremism.
