Dutch prosecutors investigating cybercrime case confirm Donald Trump has been hacked Twitter account in October, despite the fact that Washington and the social network denied this information, reports The Guardian.
The Dutch say, however, that the hacker only guessed the US president’s password and did not take any malicious actions when he entered his account, so he will not be charged.
The Dutch press writes that Victor Gevers managed to log into Donald Trump’s Twitter account on October 16, after guessing the password as “maga2020!”, The acronym for his election campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again.” .
In October, Gevers made public that he could log into Donald Trump’s account after guessing his password and said the president did not use security measures such as two-step authentication. He says he was able to read the president’s personal messages or change items on his profile, according to Forbes. The White House flatly denied the information about the hacking of Trump’s account, and Twitter specified that it did not discover elements that led them to suspect that someone else had accessed the account.
Gevers, 44, immediately informed authorities that he could access Trump’s account and even tried to alert US authorities. Later, the Secret Service contacted him and thanked him for informing him of the possible security breach.
Dutch prosecutors have confirmed that “the hacker managed to penetrate Trump’s Twitter account” but say he acted as a “moral hacker”, so he cannot be prosecuted or punished, although such actions are crimes. The Dutch investigation was carried out with the help of the police cybercrime team, and the hacker and the US authorities were informed of the results of the investigation.
