“And here we are, in the middle of December and it’s like November. Where is the snow?

President Klaus Iohannis declared this Wednesday, in the act that officially closes the afforestation campaign “A forest as big as a country” that Romanians do not know what climate change implies and how it can affect us. In his speech, the head of state mentioned the spring drought and floods in recent years, as a result of global warming.

To illustrate the consequences of climate change, he also spoke of the temperature being too high for this time of year:

“We need to make sure that these gases that heat the atmosphere, especially the carbon dioxide that already exists, are absorbed. The most efficient measure, the best, and why not say it, the most pleasant is the expansion of the planted forest area.

It is an active, good, useful measure, and I think you realize that it is a multi-benefit measure for Romania. Of course, in addition to planting forests and saving energy, we must do many other things to prevent climate change.

We want this, we have European money for such measures and I will insist that the next government pay special attention and create the right structures to have a national policy that protects the environment, improves the environment and prevents climate change.

And, so that we don’t stay like that, in a very theoretical area: what climate change means, that many people don’t really understand what we have to do with climate change.

You remember the spring drought, which destroyed thousands and thousands of hectares of crops. It is due to global warming. Do you remember the multiple floods we have had in recent years in many areas of the country, where it rained as if it had never rained. And these are the consequences of global warming. “

“And here we are, in the middle of December and it’s like November. Where is the snow? Probably, you realize, it is also an indication that global warming is not a journalistic story, but it is an absolutely undesirable effect of industrial development, ”declared the president.

Klaus Iohannis also added that he will support such efforts to protect, improve the environment and combat climate change in the future and insist that the future government have such priorities.

President Iohannis also said that not only is afforestation necessary, but that in the coming decades it is necessary to forgo fossil fuels and use alternative measures, such as electric or hydrogen cars.

How Klaus named his planted tree

To urge as many Romanians as possible to help the country’s afforestation, Klaus Iohannis himself planted a tree, which he declared that he would call “the Romania of tomorrow.”

The afforestation campaign “A forest as a country” began in the spring of this year and within it 50 million seedlings were planted in various fields, in mountainous areas and plains. During this time, around 3,000 plots were planted from scratch.
