Matei Strugurel, 36, is the first Romanian to be sentenced to prison for the crime of thwarting the fight against the disease.

On 10 December, Matei Strugurel was sentenced to 1 year in prison with execution for frustrating the fight against the disease by the Buzău Court. In addition to the prison sentence, the man was prohibited from exercising the right to be elected to public authority or any other public office and to hold an office involving the exercise of state authority for a period of 2 years after the execution of the penalty or consideration as execution of the main sentence with deprivation of liberty.

He is also obliged to pay 550 lei in court costs.

The sentence is not final and can be appealed.

In April this year, Matei Strugurel fled the hospital where he was admitted after having a bad cough. The COVID-9 test came back negative, but doctors diagnosed him with tuberculosis and decided to keep him under surveillance. However, the man fled the hospital for fear of taking Covid-19.
