“The Netherlands will be closed for five weeks,” Rutte told a televised conference at the government headquarters in The Hague, where anti-quarantine protesters gathered.
Screams and whistles were heard during Mr. Rutte’s speech. “We are not facing a simple flu, as the people behind us think,” he said bitterly, referring to these protesters.
Dutch citizens are recommended to stay home and receive a maximum of two people a day, the prime minister said, adding that these measures will last until January 19.
All non-essential stores, except supermarkets, grocery stores and pharmacies, will be closed Tuesday, while schools will be closed starting Wednesday.
Museums, cinemas, performance halls and gyms, and zoos will also be closed, he said.
This announcement occurs when the amount of pollutants increases dramatically in the country and the number of deaths has exceeded 10,000.
