“The delegation of MEPs from the SPD (German Social Democrats) expresses in this letter its serious concern about the observance of the electoral results in Romania and the procedure for appointing the future prime minister and the formation of the government. Our analysis of the OSCE preliminary report on the parliamentary elections raises serious questions about the correctness of the electoral process and the methods used in the campaign. The controversial and abusive attacks that are systematically carried out against our colleagues in Romania are not part of the European democratic values for which we militate. It is unacceptable to say that the Social Democrats in Romania are a “red plague”. At the same time, the systematic attack by the Constitutional Court and active participation in the electoral campaign without respecting the constitutional provisions is contrary to the rule of law, ”the letter says.
“Recognizing that the PSD in Romania has won the elections automatically implies the need to allow them to appoint a prime minister and try to form a majority. These are the political, democratic and legal customs of Europe. Free negotiation between the parties and respect for the Constitution, which obliges the president to be impartial, are key elements in a democratic state. Any action against democratic values and practices runs the risk of damaging Romania’s reputation and bringing it closer to the attitude of the conservative governments of Poland and Hungary. The German delegation of the SPD of the European Parliament hopes that it will not push the country in this direction, especially since after many years Romania once again has a far-right populist party in Parliament, ”the German Social Democrats also write.
