PSD President Marcel Ciolacu sent letters to embassies and left-wing political leaders in Europe on Thursday, complaining that President Klaus Iohannis does not want to appoint a PSD prime minister and asks them for public support until the consultations that will take place. place on Monday, at the Cotroceni Palace.
“PSD won a great victory on Sunday. We won the parliamentary elections with a score of almost 30%. The ruling party, PNL, supported us by 5 percent. Romanians have given a clear mandate to lead the country in these times difficult ”, begins his letter Ciolacu.
The president of the PSD affirms that the PSD is the only party that has revised its electoral lists and that the “new PSD” reaffirms its pro-European commitment.
Ciolacu says that the result of the elections must be respected and “in accordance with the Constitution”, the winning party must be invited to nominate the prime minister.
“Despite this, President Klaus Iohannis decided to get personally involved in the campaign and start negotiations with the political parties. (…) The Romanians gave us the legitimacy to nominate the prime minister and try to form a government,” writes Marcel Ciolacu to the socialist leaders in Europe.
The constitution stipulates, however, that the president appoints the prime minister of the party that obtained an absolute majority in parliament or, if there is no such majority, the prime minister is appointed after consulting the parties represented in the legislature.
At the end of the letter, the president of the PSD asks for support from the embassies and asks the European socialist leaders to “support through public messages” the Social Democratic Party to force the president “to respect the vote of the Romanians.”
