What the new parliamentary arithmetic looks like

According to the distribution of mandates, of the total of 329 elected members of the Chamber of Deputies, the PSD will have 110 parliamentarians, while the main force of the future government will have 93 deputies. USR-PLUS obtained 55 deputies, while the surprise of these elections, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, will give 33 elected members in the Chamber. The UDMR has 21 deputies, while minorities also had 17 elected. According to calculations, the majority of the PNL-USR-PLUS-UDMR in the Chamber would have 169 deputies, four more than necessary to pass organic laws, but the new government would also rely on the 17 votes of minorities.

How strong is the parliamentary majority?

In the Senate, the largest number of parliamentarians will also have PSD, through its 47 elected representatives. The PNL will have 41 senators in the new legislature, while USR-PLUS will have the support of 25 senators. Together with the nine UDMR senators, the ruling coalition would have 75 seats out of 136 seats. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians will also have 14 senators. In total, in the two forums of Parliament, PSD, USR-PLUS and UDMR would be based on 244 votes, but also on the support, not yet announced, of national minorities. Liberal sources assure that there will be no problems getting the support of this group, which has always been in power.

Unlike the 2016 elections, there is no leading party in terms of the number of parliamentarians, as happened four years ago, when the PSD had 221 seats, that is, 12 less than the 50% majority plus one in Parliament . Furthermore, the majority that is emerging today is much more fragile than four years ago when, together with the support of minority deputies, PSD and ALDE had 267 members of parliament. Most of that time was also used to overthrow his own government, namely Grindeanu’s cabinet, on June 21, 2017.
