THE REAL parliamentary bomb. Sociologist Madalina Hideg: The situation is somewhat surprising

The electoral threshold of 5% obtained at the national level is what determines whether or not a political party will be represented in the future legislature. For UDMR, however, the rule is different: either get 5 percent nationally or get at least 20% of the valid votes cast in 4 electoral districts.

The electoral threshold of 5% obtained at the national level is what determines whether or not a political party will be represented in the future legislature. For UDMR, however, the rule is different: either get 5 percent nationally or get at least 20% of the valid votes cast in 4 electoral districts.

In the elections on December 6, the UDMR had no excitement about meeting either of the two conditions necessary for representation in Parliament. In addition to the 4 counties that would have secured their seats in Parliament according to the alternative threshold criterion (Satu Mare, Mureș, Covasna and Harghita), UDMR managed to cross the 5% threshold in as many counties.

In Harghita, the UDMR was the only party that obtained the electoral threshold, with more than 85% of the votes. Otherwise, PSD scored a little over 4%, PNL a little over 3%, USR PLUS – 1.8 / 2%, AUR 1.39-1.35, PRO Romania in county 0.7%, and PMP 1%.

In Covasna, UDMR obtained an overwhelming majority – 70.25%, but two more parties crossed the electoral threshold in the province – PSD 8.06% and PNL 5% (for the Senate, UDMR obtained 72.2%, PSD 8.14 and PNL 5.19%) .

In Mureș and Satu Mare, two other counties traditionally won by the UDMR, the vote was more fragmented: Hungarians got around 37%, but there were other political parties that scored well. Thus, in Mureș, for the Chamber of Deputies, the PSD obtained around 16%, with a small difference (below a percentage) being PNL and then the USR-PLUS Alliance with approximately 11%. In the Senate, on the other hand, the first two seats are inverted, but the percentages revolve around the same values: PNL 16.79%, PSD 15.64%, Alianza USR-PLUS 10.41%.

In Satu Mare, both in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate, the NLP ranked 2nd.

It is interesting that AUR, the surprise party of these elections, obtained more than 5% in Satu Mare, respectively almost 8% in Mureș. The situation is somewhat surprising, given both the ultra-nationalist discourse of the AUR leaders and the ethnic makeup of these counties.

Other counties in which the UDMR crossed the electoral threshold are Maramureș (slightly more than 5%), Bihor (21.22% in the Chamber of Deputies and the same in the Senate), Arad (6.08% in the Chamber of Deputies and 6.2% in the Senate), Sălaj (23.94% in the Chamber of Deputies and 24.1% in the Senate),
