PNL president Ludovic Orban said Tuesday that the Liberals had calculated the mandates and concluded that “a majority can be formed without PSD.”
From the calculations made by the liberals, the PNL could obtain 244 parliamentarians with the USR and UDMR, but only if they reach an agreement on the claims of each party.
Liberals want to yield to the prime minister, but they also want to keep some ministries.
USR, for its part, announced that it does not want to come to power only to support the liberals, but to govern with the PNL. Thus, those of USR-PLUS want two important ministries: Finance and Justice.
“We calculate the mandates, the conclusion is very clear: a parliamentary majority can be formed without PSD and this is our goal: to form a parliamentary majority around the NLP, without PSD. From the calculation of mandates it is very clear that this political possibility exists and The NLP will enter into negotiations to form a parliamentary majority“Orban said, at NLP headquarters.
He specified that from the calculations so far, the PNL obtained 41 senatorial mandates and 95 deputies.
“One hundred and forty-one … 41 senators, 95 deputies. But no are final, we are waiting to see their completion. There are still a few minutes to validate, it is not yet the final decision.“Ludovic Orban added.
According to him, the possible partners with whom PNL to form the parliamentary majority are USR PLUS and UDMR.
“Obviously, those of USR PLUS, those of UDMR are possible partners. (…) I think that the political parties, eventually partners, understand the situation in Romania and I am convinced that, after negotiations, a stable formula of government to a formula that can implement the government program based, obviously, on the national development plan that we present “, said the president of the PNL, according to Agerpres.
When asked if and with what legitimacy he would participate in the negotiations for the formation of a parliamentary majority and a new government, Orban replied: “Yes, of course, obviously, with the legitimacy of a coherent parliamentary representation, that, although we are not the party in the first place, we are the party that has the largest number of seats ”.
Meeting in NLP
The liberal leadership met Tuesday to discuss the negotiating strategy to form a parliamentary majority and the new government. In the afternoon, the Liberals meet with President Klaus Iohannis.
The meeting took place in the context in which the leader of the party, Ludovic Orban, resigned from the leadership of the Executive, announcing as objectives the construction of a parliamentary majority that does not include the PSD and its involvement in the negotiations for the formation of a Government.
Also, President Iohannis announced his intention to convene consultations in Cotroceni in a few days for the formation of the Government.
“I am convinced that, in the next negotiations, the NLP will have the capacity to give a new prime minister and to provide the backbone for the leap that Romania needs.Ludovic Orban also stated in the statement announcing the prime minister’s resignation.
The PNL ranks second in percentages obtained in the parliamentary elections, with the PSD ranking first.
President Klaus Iohannis highlighted on Monday afternoon, in his first reaction after the parliamentary elections, that the electoral results show that there is no clear winner of these elections, and if we look at the provisional results for the moment we see that the NLP in 2016 obtained the 20%, now obtained 25%, so a clear increase.
USR, for its part, together with PLUS obtained 8% in 2016, while they have 15%, obviously an increase, and the PSD, which had obtained 45%, dropped dramatically to 29%.
Iohannis announced consultations with political parties
Therefore, it is clear, if we collect these results, that the center-right parties together obtained more than 50% of the validly cast votes. I can tell you that that has been my goal and that is why I have to express myself a little more in public in recent weeks. In this way the PSD can finally, after a whole cycle of elections, the PSD can remain on the sidelines of the political decision.“Iohannis stated, according to News.ro.
He specified that a center-right coalition is being crystallized, which may propose a coalition government.
“In a few days I will convene consultations with the parties that will meet in the new parliament. The new Government, which will be formed, will manage the necessary measures in the pandemic, will urgently present long-awaited and often delayed reform measures, will manage the vaccination campaign and without a doubt, in the shortest possible time, will present a draft budget for the year 2021, along with how European money will be attracted, ”concluded Klaus Iohannis.
In accordance with article 103 of the Constitution, the President of Romania appoints a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, after consulting the party that has an absolute majority in Parliament or, if there is no such majority, the parties represented in the Parliament. Parliament.
The candidate for the post of Prime Minister will request, within 10 days of the appointment, the vote of confidence of Parliament on the program and the entire list of the Government.
