Vasile Todirean (42 years old) had been living on the streets of Italy for several years, after losing his job and having no other chance. In the streets of Villafranca, a small town near Verona, he met his compatriot Cristian Relu Tuca, Eros De Mori and Liliano Bosoni, all without occupation.
The three were to be his executioners last year, on July 8. So, Todirean met his friends not far from Villafranca station. They spoke, but at one point, in the middle of a heated discussion, the three seemingly attacked him out of nowhere, brutally beating him. They did not stop even when Vasile Todirean fell, nor did they stop even when the victim could not even defend himself with his hands from the rain of blows. And when they got tired of beating him, they came up with a criminal idea and doused him with an incendiary substance, after which they set him on fire.
In agony, Todirean also found the means to crawl to the station platform, where he was discovered by a train mechanic. Initially, he thought he had come across a dead body and quickly sounded the alarm. For the Romanian, however, it was too late. He was rushed to a hospital near Verona and died two months later.
The investigation that followed his death revealed his connection to the three murderers, and the police saw images captured by a video camera in the street, for which the men were arrested. After more than a year, the trial ended, at least in the first instance, reports the ANSA agency.
At the end of the trial, a court in Verona sentenced everyone to life imprisonment. However, the decision can be challenged, which the lawyers defending the defendants have announced they will do.
