According to the investigation, Radik Tagirov, who strangled 26 retirees, described in detail how he killed his victims, but could not explain why. He was detained in Kazan on Tuesday morning and late in the afternoon the Russian Interior Ministry published a video of the interrogation, reports the Ria website.
Investigators have no doubt that Tagirov, 38, and the well-known Volga maniac are the same person. Authorities first began speaking out in Kazan in the spring of 2012 about a cruel serial killer who exclusively hunted women of one age.
In February, relatives found the body of an 84-year-old retiree on Gagarin Street no. 75. In March two others were found in other parts of the city: one was strangled with a tail in a tunic twisted with a spoon, the other with an iron wire.
For eight years, agents from the Interior Ministry and the FSB searched for the murderer in various regions of the country simultaneously, and the Central Office of the Investigative Committee of Russia participated in the investigation of the criminal case. After checking more than ten thousand people, security agents went to the locksmith in Kazan.
The suspect in the crime, Tagirov, could not immediately recall all his adventures, only saying that he started killing in 2010 or 2011. He also had a hard time naming the exact number of people strangled: he said he did not count them. .
“I took care of the future victim in the market or near the store, then I accompanied her home and asked for a visit,” he explains in the video. “He introduced himself as an employee of the management company, a cleaning agent. Once inside, he put his hand around her neck and strangled her until the woman fell asleep, until she fell. Silently and quickly, she looked like a painless murder method “.
According to the detainee, the main motive for the crimes was robbery. “It all happened spontaneously,” Radik continued.
The commission of inquiry has assigned 32 victims to the Volga strangler, now we are talking about 26. The murders took place not only in Kazan, in Ulyanovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Izhevsk, Perm. In total, as of August 2012, there were 18 such episodes.
It is worth noting that the maniac did not bother with a thorough investigation of the apartments of the murdered, but, as a rule, took only gold jewelry located in a prominent place. For any information about the offender, the authorities promised a reward of up to three million rubles.
When the investigator asked why all the robberies ended in murder, Tagirov, who had previously been convicted of robbery, could not answer.
However, according to former investigator Amurkhan Yandiev, who caught Chikatilo (another famous Russian serial killer) and many other known maniacs, the Volga case clearly enjoyed violence.
“He probably chose the retirees because they were the most defenseless and could not defend themselves,” Yandiev explains. “Since the offender did not always accept money, he probably liked the murder process itself. I know, about rape in In this case, there was no question, which is strange: such methods are extremely rare in judicial practice. Typically, criminals rape their victims. “
The researcher also suggested that psychological trauma received in childhood also contributed to this behavior.
“Perhaps he was disappointed, for example, with his mother or someone close to him,” clarifies Amurkhan, “and is now taking revenge on unknown old women. But this must be determined by investigation.
Authorities have already taken DNA samples from him and sent him for examination. Given the vast geography of the crimes, investigators and the suspect will have to verify their testimony in situ in 12 regions of the country.
Furthermore, security forces need to know if the crime series really ended in 2012. After all, according to experts, maniacs never stop. If Tagirov is found guilty, he could face a life sentence.
The Volga Maniac is not the first series in Russia to exclusively hunt single older women. In 2010, Irina Gaidamachuk was arrested in the Sverdlovsk region for her 17 crimes. According to the investigation, the defendant met the pensioners, gained their trust, then killed and robbed them. In 2012, she was sentenced to 20 years in a high-security colony.
