In June 2016, by decree of President Nicolae Timofti, Traian Băsescu and his wife also became citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
In 2017, Igor Dodon withdrew his Moldovan citizenship from Traian Băsescu. Regarding this decision, Igor Dodon said that former President Nicolae Timofti had violated the law when he signed the decree granting citizenship from which the Băsescu family benefited. On November 8, 2018, former President Traian Băsescu was officially left without dual citizenship and the Chisinau Supreme Court of Justice rejected his appeal on the previous decision.
