The recently discovered metal structure in the desert of Utah, USA, has already fired the imagination of millions of people, who immediately compared it to the mysterious monolith in the 1968 film “Space Odyssey 2001”, directed by Stanley Kubrick. How this object appeared in an isolated and deserted area remains a subject open to speculation. The idea of the imposing matte black monolith created by a mysterious alien species appears in several key scenes of the film “Space Odyssey 2001”, which is itself based on the novel of the same name by Arthur C. Clarke.
The object was accidentally discovered in the desert last week by a helicopter crew, during a routine mission carried out by the Utah Department of Public Safety.
“One of the biologists on board saw it,” said pilot Bret Hutchings. “He told me: ‘Come back, come back!’ I asked him what it was and he replied that there was something on the ground and that we had to go see what it was. “
In the middle of the desert, among the reddish rocks, there was a shiny metallic monolith stuck in the ground. Hutchings estimated that he is between 3 and 4 meters tall. It didn’t look like it had fallen to the ground, but rather positioned.
“I was joking that if one of us suddenly disappears, the others will run away,” said Bret Hutchings, who said the object was probably placed in the desert by a big fan of Kubrick’s movie.
If the monolith was still man-made, the work was compared to that of minimalist sculptor John McCracken, who died in 2011. One artist’s curator told The Guardian that the monolith is not the work of McCracken and that we are talking about on “the creation of an artist who thus tried to pay homage to McCracken.”
However, the same curator told the New York Times that, in fact, the monolith was created by McCracken.
