Critical days are approaching for the fate of post-Brexit relations with Britain. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says there has been real progress in the trade deal negotiations, but cautioned that the risk of failure has not been eliminated.
Brussels has ruled out any option that affects the integrity of the European single market.
“The next few days will be decisive. The European Union is well prepared for a no-deal scenario. One thing is clear. Whatever the outcome, there must and will be a clear difference between membership of the Union and that of a partner. With With so little time left, we will do everything we can to reach an agreement. We are willing to be creative, but we are not willing to question the integrity of the single market, “said Ursula von der Leyen.
The statements are given in the context in which there is only time until the end of the year for the conclusion of the agreement and its ratification. If they don’t, substantial customs duties will automatically take effect from 1 January on all goods moving between the UK and the EU.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out extending the transition period after December 31, 2020.
“Of course, we will not extend the transition period, but we want to make practical arrangements to help businesses in Northern Ireland. We agreed to a one-year adjustment period so that there would be no interruptions in the supply of medicines.
