A North Korean gymnast managed to jump the fence in South Korea, his acrobatic qualities helped him to cross the border very strictly guarded by armed soldiers who have orders to shoot.
Crossing the border between North and South Korea is an almost impossible mission. The area is patrolled by armed guards, guarded by surveillance cameras and protected by two million mines and barbed wire. However, this man, believed to be in his 20s, somehow managed to jump over the fence and escape.
The fence he jumped is three meters high, according to The Korea Herald, an online publication from South Korea. The man raised the suspicions of the South Koreans, who asked him to recreate the brave escape.
It seems that the man took advantage of his short stature and extraordinary sporting qualities and jumped the fence without activating the sensors with which he is equipped.
The young man was found dressed in blue civilian clothes and was detained by the South Korean army after requesting political asylum.
According to some information released by the press, the man also used a stick.
South Koreans wonder why the highly sophisticated and technologically advanced security system has not worked properly. An official told Yonhap News Agency: “We will analyze why the sensors did not sound and we will make sure they are working properly.”
Southern media say some 32,000 people in North Korea have fled to South Korea. Figures vary from year to year, but the peak was reached in 2009, when 2,900 North Koreans illegally crossed the border to the south.
