How much will the COVID vaccine cost? Does the average Romanian allow it?

A European official revealed to Reuters that they were the price negotiated by the European Union with the two pharmaceutical groups for the purchase of hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine intended to immunize citizens of the member states.

According to this official, who wanted to remain anonymous, the community block agreed to pay 15.50 euros for each dose of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the US group Pfizer and the German company BioNTech. A simple calculation shows that the EU will pay up to 3.1 billion euros ($ 3.7 billion) for 200 million doses. The amount will increase to 4,650 million euros if another 100 million doses of vaccine are purchased over and above what was contracted.

Thus, the European Union will pay a lower price for each dose of the vaccine developed by Pfizer, compared to the United States. According to the European official, the agreement concluded with the agreed pharmaceutical group also includes the guarantee that EU countries will receive compensation if the US manufacturer directs the doses of the vaccine to the US.

How much does the CureVac vaccine cost?

Separately, the European Union has agreed to pay 10 euros for each of the 225 million doses of the new coronavirus vaccine developed by CureVac. The community block obtained a discount with respect to the price of 12 euros that the company initially set. The European Union has reached an agreement with CureVac to supply up to 405 million doses of vaccine, of which 180 million are optional.

The European official also said that CureVac has committed to start delivering the vaccine from the end of March 2021. It is not yet clear whether the optional 180 million doses will cost € 10 or € 12 for each dose. If it cost 10 euros for each dose, the community block would pay 4,050 million euros for the 405 million doses.

So far, the European Commission has signed five pre-order contracts for potential vaccines with AstraZenaca, Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-GSK, Pfizer / BioNTech, and CureVac.
