The Institute of Statistics says that the effects of the health crisis on demographic phenomena are visible in the case of deaths, especially in April, June, July, August and September 2020, when there were increases compared to April, June, July , August and September 2019, of marriages that, as of March, registered decreases in the number of events with respect to the corresponding month of 2019. The number of births decreased each month with respect to the same period of the previous year, except in August and September when a higher number of live births was registered than the previous year, Mediafax points out.

Likewise, the phenomenon of mortality registers a seasonal evolution, being more accentuated in the winter months and registering the lowest values ​​in July, August, and September.

In September 2020, almost two thirds of all deaths were registered in people aged 70 years or older (9,039 deaths, representing 41.1% of the total, were registered in the age groups of 80 years and over, 5,230 deaths , which represents 23.8%, in people aged 70 to 79 years) and 4354 deaths (19.8%) in people aged 60 to 69 years. Naturally, on the other hand, the lowest number of deaths was recorded in the age groups of 5 to 19 years (64 deaths), 20 to 29 years (104 deaths) and 0-4 years (131 deaths).

The natural increase remained negative in September 2020, with deaths in surplus compared to live births for 3,937 people.

In September 2020, 12,471 marriages were registered in the civil status offices, 2,458 less than in August 2020. The number of divorces pronounced by final judicial decisions and according to Law no. 202/2010 was 2371 in September 2020, 418 more than in August 2020.

The number of live births registered in September 2020 was higher in 1749 compared to the same month of 2019. The number of people who died in September 2020 was 2991 more than in September 2019. The negative natural increase increased in September of 2020 compared to September 2019 (-3937 people in September 2020, compared to -2695 people in September 2019).

The number of children under one year of age who died was 13 times higher in September 2020 than that registered in September 2019.

In September 2020, 11,146 people (5,974 men and 5,172 women) died in urban areas and 10,827 people (5,885 men and 4,942 women) died in rural areas. Compared to the same month in 2019, the number of people who died increased by 1,872 people (1,092 men and 780 women) in urban areas and by 1,119 people (610 men and 509 women) in rural areas.

The number of marriages was, in September 2020, 3,099 less than that registered in the same month of the previous year. By final judicial decisions and in accordance with Law no. 202/2010 in September 2020 were pronounced with 95 fewer divorces than in September 2019.
