The attorney general of the United States, Bill Barr, gave the green light on Monday to the opening of investigations into possible irregularities during the presidential elections on November 3. Donald Trump assures that the election was marked by “fraud”, but without providing evidence, reports AFP.
Bill Barr, one of the ministers most loyal to the acting president, pointed out that this authorization, sent to federal prosecutors across the country, does not indicate that the Justice Department has evidence of genuine fraud, Agerpres reports.
“I authorize you to investigate substantial allegations of irregularities in voting or ballot counting prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions, in certain cases,” he wrote in the document.
“These investigations can be conducted if there are clear and potentially credible allegations of wrongdoing that, if proven, could have an impact on the outcome of federal elections in a state,” he added.
Voter fraud investigations are normally the responsibility of each state, which establishes and controls its own electoral rules.
The United States Department of Justice does not usually intervene in such a situation until the number of votes is certified and the tally is incomplete.
Donald Trump’s campaign team is challenging Joe Biden’s results in several states, primarily Pennsylvania and Nevada.
