Current insecurity and global concern amid the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic could lead to another world war, British Army Chief of Staff Nick Carter told Reuters on Sunday.
In an interview that coincided with Remembrance Sunday, Britain’s annual commemorations in memory of those killed or wounded in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts, Nick Carter noted that escalating regional tensions and errors in judgment they could eventually lead to an extended conflict.
The world is a very insecure and restless place
“I think we live in an age where the world is a very unsafe and restless place and of course the dynamics of global competition is a feature of our lives, and I think the real risk that we take with a fairly large amount conflict. The current regional crisis is facing an escalation of errors, “Carter told Sky News.
When asked if there was a real threat from another world war, Carter said, “I say there is a risk and we must be aware of those risks.”
Carter, who has led the British Army since 2018, said it was important to remember those who died in previous wars as a warning to those who might repeat the mistakes of the past.
History does not repeat itself, but has a rhythmic
“If we forget the horrors of war, I think the biggest risk is that people think that going to war is reasonable,” he warned.
“We have to keep in mind that history may not repeat itself, but it has a rhythm, and if we look back to the last century (and the period before) of both world wars, I think there can be no doubt that there was an escalation that it led to errors in judgment that ultimately led to wars of proportions that we hope we will never see again, the British official explained.
