Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate in the race for the White House, is the winner of the November 3 presidential election, according to media projections. Here’s what should happen from Election Day to Inauguration Day:
- November 3, 2020: While millions of Americans mailed their ballots in the weeks leading up to the election, Election Day in the US will be the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Votes are counted across the country on Election Day.
- Nov. 4-23: Votes sent by mail must be mailed before Nov. 3 in every US state, but can be received and counted after that date in many US states.
- November 10 – December 11: US states must validate election results.
- December 8: Under the Electoral Counting Law, this is the date by which states must have counted the votes, clarified disputes, and determined the winner of the votes at their electoral college. The governors must issue the certification documents, in which the winner of the ballot and the list of electoral representatives of the respective state must be entered.
- December 14th: They are loc electoral vote. By law, this date is set for the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December, and this year it falls on December 14.
- December 23: Electoral votes must reach Washington. Validated ballots have nine days to travel from their states to Capitol Hill, the seat of Congress.
- January 3, 2021: Some members of the House of Representatives and new members of the Senate are sworn in at noon. The legislature of the 117th American Congress officially begins.
- January 6: All members of Congress, the House, and the Senate meet in the House of Representatives. The President of the Senate (who is the current Vice President, Mike Pence) presides over the session in which the votes of the Electoral College are read and counted in alphabetical order by two persons appointed by the House, respectively the Senate. I then give the situation to Pence, who announces the results and listens to the objections. There are 538 electoral votes – one for each congressman and senator plus three for Washington DC If no candidate reaches 270, the 435 members of the House decide who will be the president.. The chamber has until noon on January 20 to make its decision. - January 20: It is the day of the investiture. The new president is sworn in at noon.
