Thus, according to the RAPEX analysis, it was concluded that the FFP2 protective mask does not provide the promised protection. Along with this message, which also reached Romania, information was sent to help identify the problem mask models.
In addition to that, it was initially known that the FFP2 protective mask was one of the safest, with a degree of protection of almost 100%. Subsequent research has established that the reality is completely different: the filtering capacity of this mask is less than 73%, according to RAPEX.
Turning to the identification of problem masks, the citizens of the European Union were informed that they are produced in China, and the target models are KN95, KF94, FFP2 NR. It should also be noted that Belgium notified the alert through the RAPEX system.
RAPEX: insufficient filtering capacity
RAPEX specialists stated that the mask does not have a 100% degree of protection and that, in fact, the average measured value is less than 72.9%. “The total filtering capacity of the mask is insufficient (the average measured value is less than 72.9%) and the mask does not fit the figure correctly.
As such, an excessive amount of particles or microorganisms can pass through the mask, increasing the risk of infection if additional protective measures are not taken. The product does not comply with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation or the European Standard En 149.
Return the FFP2 protective mask
Consequently, the health authorities of the European Union have asked those who bought the FFP2 protective mask to return it as soon as possible to the commercial points where it was sold. The description of the claimed skins can also be found here: Notification_A12_01461_20_en.
Also in the same context, it should be noted that Luxembourg issued another alert. Another unsupported skin model appears in the foreground. As in the aforementioned case, problem masks were presented in Luxembourg as ones that guaranteed high protection.
The description contained references such as “high filtration capacity, which helps filter up to 90% of bacteria” and “ideal for home use”. Nothing more false, as the RAPEX alert system later demonstrated.
The description of the claimed masks in Luxembourg can be found here: Notification_INFO_00135_20_en. “In the absence of evidence of the effectiveness of these masks, this could create a false sense of security for the wearer and therefore could not adequately protect him if not combined with additional measures,” said RAPEX officials.
And yet what is the RAPEX alert?
RAPEX is a system for the rapid exchange of information on dangerous products between the European Commission and the Member States of the European Union. RAPEX is essentially the European rapid alert system for dangerous products.
Its role is to ensure the rapid flow of information on dangerous products recalled and / or recovered from consumers anywhere in Europe. The speed of sending alerts also enables faster action in the European Union.
