PSD president Marcel Ciolacu criticized Finance Minister Florin Cîţu for the decision to borrow Romania from foreign markets and recalled that Nicolae Ceauşescu was “shot because he paid the debts.” In response, Minister Cîţu declared himself “surprised” by this comparison and apologized to the PSD leader.
“He (Florin Cîţu), instead of coming to explain to the Romanians how he managed to lend this country at an interest rate of 4.74%, the highest interest paid by a state of the European Union, to explain how, During 10-15 years we will pay these loans of almost 100 billion: until now, no government has borrowed in 7 months with such an amount. The most tragic thing is that we do not know where that money went “, said Ciolacu in an interview with TVR.
“Did you know that I shot Ceausescu because he paid his debts, what do we do now with those who owe the country?” Ciolacu asked.
In response, Florin Cîţu valued Ciolacu’s statement as an invitation to his public lynching, “like Ceausescu.”
“This is how Ciolacu wants to lead Romania! It is very difficult for me to write how I feel at the moment. Many good hours have already passed since the third man of the state urged the population to publicly lynch me, like Ceaușescu,” Cîţu said.
“I am shocked and cannot comment on the seriousness of these statements,” added the finance minister.
