He was telling me it was an extermination camp

Serious accusations for the doctors of the infectious diseases department of the Sibiu County Hospital. The family of a patient who died from COVID-19, who also suffered from lymphatic cancer, says he received inhumane treatment from medical staff. The man’s son works as a doctor in France and wants to draw attention to the way a desperate patient was treated in a Romanian hospital.

Mircea Rebegel was 71 years old. At the end of September, the man became ill and was hospitalized in the hematology department of the Sibiu hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the COVID test result was negative, but the patient contracted the virus after hospitalization. On October 8, he was transferred to the infectious diseases department. The family remained in telephone contact with the patient, who constantly complained about the way he was being treated.

Tudorita Rebegel, wife of the deceased patient: “He was telling me that it was an extermination camp and that he wanted to go home.”

Theodor Rebegel, son of the deceased patient: “I was talking to him on the phone and he told me that he was thirsty, that his mouth was dry, that nobody was passing by and that it was a death camp.

Mircea Rebegel passed away on October 27. The day before, family members managed to contact him for the last time.

Tudorita Rebegel, wife of the deceased patient: “That’s all he said: Teo, I love you! And those were his last words.”

The patient’s son, physician Theodor Rebegel, says the discharge sheet shows that his father did not receive proper treatment for COVID-19. Also, doctors told the family that the man was in a coma when he died. But a photograph taken by the relative who came to identify him contradicts this.

Theodor Rebegel: “His eyes were wide and his face was tight from a gasp of oxygen. A man who dies in a coma just doesn’t keep his eyes wide open and his face is tight.”

Upon discharge, contrary to COVID-19 procedures, the family received the deceased’s clothing.

Theodor Rebegel, son of the deceased patient: “Inconceivable! Clothes with biological fluids from a man with Covid to send an old woman home and my ex-sister-in-law who has the sequelae of tuberculosis. It is a huge risk that infectious diseases have run in Sibiu.”

Hospital: the patient received the appropriate treatment for his condition

Digi24 requested a reaction from the Sibiu County Hospital. Through the spokesperson for the Sibiu prefecture, the representatives of the medical unit conveyed that the patient received the appropriate treatment for his condition.

Andreea Ștefan, Sibiu Prefecture Spokesperson: “An attempt was made to feed it orally, carefully, within tolerance, due to swallowing disorders, the patient choked on every attempt to feed it.”

Dr. Theodor Rebegel denies that his father had swallowing problems: I spoke to him. He never had a problem swallowing. They are all inventions. And there is nothing written on the discharge sheet.

Mircea Rebegel’s relatives say they did not expect her to be saved. But the doctors would have expected them to treat him humanely, even though he was in a very serious condition. Therefore, Mircea Rebegel’s son and wife wanted to send a message to the medical staff at Sibiu County Hospital.

Tudorița Rebegel: “Be more careful with the sick there, because they are souls and they are people!”

Theodor Rebegel: “Be careful and behave with the patient as he behaves with some people! Have mercy and compassion, not like that. In our country we also have a disaster, but there have been no cases like this.”
