Following the attack in Nice and the arrest of a man armed with a knife in Lyon, an Orthodox priest was shot and wounded on Saturday, October 31 in Lyon. A suspect, according to the attacker’s description, was arrested by police that same night, according to Le Progress.

The suspect in the armed attack was found by the police in a “kebab” restaurant in the 3rd district of Lyon. His victim is Nikolaos Kakavelakis (52 years old), an Orthodox priest of Greek nationality, father of three children, who was shot twice in the abdomen.

The attack took place at 4:00 p.m. local time (Romanian time – 5:00 p.m.), when the priest was closing the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, in the 7th district of Lyon. “He was attacked by a single man who shot him twice,” a police source said.

The priest was found conscious upon the arrival of the rescue, but in serious condition. The scene of the attack was delimited and the police began to search for the attacker.

President Emmanuel Macron published a message in Arabic immediately after the attack: “In recent days, our country has no problem with any religion. All these religions are practiced freely in our land. There is no stigma: France is committed to living together in peace “.

Earlier, the French Interior Ministry wrote on Twitter that a serious incident had occurred in Lyon, but did not provide details on what was happening.

The Lyon attack comes three days after the attack on the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption basilica in Nice, where three people were killed by an Islamist attacker armed with a knife.

After the attack in Nice, Emmanuel Macron announced the transfer of 3,000 to 7,000 soldiers for Operation Sentinel to protect places of worship and schools. Added to this are some 7,000 police officers, half of them reserve gendarmes, who will be at the disposal of the prefects on Monday to guarantee security.
