The new mayor of Bucharest, Nicuşor Dan, stated, in a program broadcast on Saturday by Digi 24, that the city council of the capital and the institutions and companies under its subordination have approximately 35,000 employees. Thus, there are approximately 1,100 employees in the City Council, 11,000 employees in the Bucharest Transport Service, 3,500 employees in Thermal Power, in the other municipal companies approximately 3,500 people and in the subordinate institutions several thousand employees.

According to the new mayor, his salaries represent an expenditure of 60 million lei per month, and at the level of the capital’s 4 billion budget, the expenditure for salaries amounts to 17-18 percent.

As for the employees of the Capital City Council and the six district mayors, plus the institutions subordinate to them, Nicuşor Dan stated that “they are probably in the order of 70,000”.

Nicusor Dan mentioned that he will fulfill the election campaign promise to abolish some of the municipal companies established during his predecessor’s term.

“The subordinate companies, except STB and Termoenergetica, are legal tricks to get out of the auction process and most of them will be closed, it is a commitment that we have since the electoral campaign. I cannot give a percentage but we will do an audit and management of human and financial resources in each institution and based on it we will make the decision, “said Nicusor Dan.

For example, in the Recreation Parks and Lakes Administration (ALPAB), which has been divided into several structures, said that the people of the companies into which it was divided will be returned to ALPAB, the companies will be dissolved, after which “We will see what to do with all the people we have in ALPAB.”

“Political leaders, what does it mean on the boards of directors and their managers will not be found in this …” added Nicuşor Dan.

He added that immediately after taking office, he found that “several resignations at the director level had been submitted to the Capital City Council.”

He also explained the reason why he did not go to the City Council since he was elected until the moment of his inauguration as mayor: “We did not want to open other debates on other issues, which are leading nowhere.”
