Belgium is once again at the epicenter of the pandemic disaster and, to stem the flow of hospitalizations, authorities announced a series of restrictions on Friday. These include the closure of all non-essential stores, as well as a partial ban on visits to family and friends.
Schools will also be closed for two weeks. The nightly restrictions were already in place and bars and restaurants have been closed since the beginning of this month.
The measures will take effect on Sunday and will be reviewed in a month. Each family will be allowed one visit per week, while those living alone will be allowed to see only one person.
The nation of 11 million, which is home to the main institutions of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO, has the third highest death rate from coronavirus, after San Marino and Peru, according to Johns Hopkins University. This despite the fact that it is one of the richest countries in the world and has one of the strongest health systems in Europe.
The number of daily hospitalizations in Belgium doubles every eight days. The country is at risk of running out of available intensive care beds until the end of next week, after the number of Covid-19 patients treated in intensive care units rose from 525 on October 21 to 1,057 yesterday.
