More than 200 young people of Turkish origin demonstrated violently in Vienna, near Lyon, eager to fight with the Armenians in the city. They only withdrew when the police intervened by force.
The incidents took place last night. There are Turkish and Armenian communities in the area, and yesterday there were clashes between members of the two communities, amid the bloody conflict in the Caucasus, in the Nagorno Karabakh region.
It all started when members of the Turkish community attacked participants in an Armenian demonstration with knives and hammers. Four people were injured.
The Armenians retaliated by attacking a group of Turks with axes and knives and wounding three people.
Following these actions, the Vienna demonstration took place.
However, the conflict has even deeper roots. A satellite city in the Lyon metropolitan area has a high concentration of Armenians, many of whom are descendants of those who fled Turkey a century ago after the Armenian genocide. There is also the first monument dedicated to the victims in 1915.
