The perpetrator of the attack on the Notre Dame Cathedral in Nice, which beheaded a woman and killed two other people, is a 21-year-old Tunisian citizen, according to sources close to the investigation, cited by Reuters and AFP, according to Agerpres. It reached Europe after crossing the Mediterranean to the island of Lampedusa, from where it entered Italy and then France.

The identity of the attacker has not been officially confirmed, but according to some sources cited by AFP, his name is Brahim Aouissaoui.

He allegedly entered France from Italy, where he arrived via the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, located halfway between Tunisia and Italy, and also an important hub on the migrants’ route to Europe, AFP sources said.

The young man arrived in France in late September, where he was quarantined by Italian authorities before being the subject of an order to leave the territory and released, according to a local source close to the case. He did not apply for asylum in France, the source said.

According to another source close to the case, the investigators only have a document from the Italian Red Cross that proves the identity of Brahim Aouissaoui.

Bloody day in France

A terrorist stabbing attack took place in the French city of Nice on Thursday. Three people died, one of them beheaded, after a man armed with a knife attacked them in a cathedral in the city center.

Two more attacks were subsequently recorded, one in Avignon and the other at the French consulate in Saudi Arabia.

Another incident took place in Lyon, where an Afghan dressed in traditional costume, armed with a knife and considered threatening, was arrested on Thursday afternoon.

All of France was the target of the “Islamist terrorist attack” in Nice, said Thursday night President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived at the site of the Notre Dame cathedral attack.
