George Mariș de Brașov died at only 32 years old, trying to take a flight with a fast paraglider from the top of Caraiman. It was not the first time that he practiced “speed flight”, a risky sport, with few followers in our country.

A perfect performer

George was a mountain enthusiast. For years he was on the podium in climbing competitions, and for some time he had fallen in love with speed flight, flight in which he used a small wing, which allowed him to reach high speeds, even 100 km per hour, almost rocky. . For fans of this dangerous sport, flights from Bucegi are extremely challenging. They launch themselves into the void, supported only by a narrow wing, and descend at breakneck speeds through steep valleys.

Accustomed to breaking off the ridges and reaching the foot of the mountains in just a few minutes, George launched himself safely into the air again. She trusted him and the weather seemed perfect, but he didn’t make it to the finish line.

“His colleagues announced to us in the morning, around 8 in the morning, that one of his group fell down and no longer answered, he no longer had a reaction, he no longer answered the phone. He fell on the rock, practically a few hundred meters away, he had no chance to survive, ”says Claudiu Vasilescu from Salvamont Buşteni.

“It’s a high-risk sport, the pilots usually have a lot of control, because I suspect it’s not really an uncontrollable wing. I mean, we suspect it was a failed takeoff. I’m really sorry, because I knew the boy, he’s a very good climber, He’s a mountaineer and knew the dangers, ”believes mountain rescuer Andy Mihai.

Bad coincidence

Despite his performances, George was an extremely discreet man. The general public greeted him with the broadcast of the Ninja Warrior contest, broadcast on Pro TV. Two years ago, also on October 28, George won over the audience and was applauded for his bravery.

“My advantage in this competition would be a combination of agility and strength. If I ride something and I want to do something, I usually get it,” George Mariș said on the show.

In 2018, in the same area, an American tourist crashed during an extreme jump, also performed with speed paragliding, from Crucea de pe Caraiman to Busteni. Speedflying is a new and little known sport in Romania. It doesn’t have many followers, because so far dozens of fans of this sport around the world have lost their lives.
