Dominic Fritz was validated today as mayor of Timisoara, reports Press Alert.

Shortly after the decision of the Timiș Court, which judged the appeals filed by three people, Dominic Fritz announced on Facebook that he had a discussion with the prefect Liliana Oneț and his investiture will take place on Friday, at 10 am.

“I am, today, the definitively accepted mayor of Timisoara.

I also spoke with Ms. Prefect, who informed me that I will be inaugurated on Friday October 30 at 10:00.

The Timiș Court rejected the three appeals against the decision to validate my mandate as mayor, invoking an incompatibility between my status as a European citizen and the right to run for mayor. The judges confirmed the legality of validating my mandate, my candidacy and the vote of the people of Timisoara. The request for referral to the Constitutional Court was also rejected.

It is a victory not only for me as a person, it is for the people of Timisoara who gave their vote to a European citizen. Today’s decision enshrines this vote. It defeated the idea of a common Europe, the principle that every European citizen has the right to participate in elections in the locality in which they have chosen to settle. It is also a victory for all Romanians who have settled in other European countries and are recognized as having a fundamental right, to participate in decisions regarding the direction of the communities in which they live.

I am very happy that Timișoara has opened a path that establishes once and for all the idea of a common Europe in which we are equal in rights. Right now: get to work, Timisoara! “Dominic Fritz wrote in the message posted on Facebook.
