A Philippine police officer was killed by a rooster during an operation to stop an illegal cockfight in North Samar province, the BBC writes.
Lt. Christine Bolok was struck by the metal spur attached to the crow’s foot, severing her femoral artery. The officer was rushed to the hospital, but the doctors could do nothing to save his life.
Cockfighting is very popular in the Philippines. Before the pandemic, fighting was only allowed in specially conditioned areas, on Sundays and holidays, as well as during local festivals. However, following the spread of COVID cases, they were banned.
North Samar Province Police Chief Colonel Arnel Apud told AFP news agency that the unfortunate incident was “a disgrace that I cannot explain.”
“I couldn’t believe it when I was informed of the incident. It is the first time in 25 years of surveillance that I have lost a colleague to a fighting cock.”
Three people were arrested and two roosters confiscated during this police raid in the city of San José.
