Defied Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Tuesday that protesters against his government had committed acts of terrorism and that the authorities would have an appropriate response.
Lukashenko told a meeting in Minsk that protesters had blocked the railways, which “could lead to serious accidents and the death of many people,” according to comments from the state news agency BelTa.
“They are actions of organized criminal groups with signs of terrorism. When the red line is crossed, the government must respond, “Lukashenko was quoted as saying by Agerpres.
Massive protests have occurred in Minsk every week since the disputed elections in early August, which, according to opposition supporters, were rigged to keep Lukashenko in power.
At the age of 66, he ruled Belarus, a former Soviet republic, for more than a quarter of a century, tolerating few differences of opinion.
About 600 people were detained in unauthorized demonstrations in the country on Monday, the Belarusian Interior Ministry said in a statement released by state media. The institution also said that more than 500 people were detained on Sunday.
