For two days, the PSD has not been able to convene the Permanent Office to debate the law that allows Parliament to set the date of the parliamentary elections.
The normative act was initiated and promoted by PSD, which wanted to postpone the parliamentary elections, scheduled for December 6, to the spring of next year. In a first phase, the law that was approved in the summer of this year, more precisely in July, but after being challenged in the Constitutional Court, was returned to Parliament for a new examination, by President Klaus Iohannis.
It seems that, in the meantime, the Social Democrats have changed their minds and have reached a tacit agreement with the PNL, so that the elections will be held on the date initially set by the Government on December 6.
Thus, the meeting of the Permanent Office of the Senate, whose agenda was also this bill, could not be held on the scheduled date, Monday, October 26. This is because two senators, one from the UDMR and the second from PSD, were absent and the quorum could not be met. Subsequently, PSD called a new meeting of the Permanent Office, for Tuesday, October 27, at 1:00 p.m., with the same agenda. The meeting was supposed to take place online, but the situation was repeated. The same two senators, Ion Ganea – PSD and Tzancos Barna – UDMR, were absent from the appeal, so a new postponement was needed.
According to some political sources, the absence of the two, on two occasions, was not accidental but rather reflects the desire of the PSD that the elections be held on time.
During the normative act
In July 2020, the law was approved that establishes a series of measures for the organization of elections for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and leaves the Legislature to decide the date of the election. It was immediately challenged by President Klaus Iohannis and the PNL in the Constitutional Court.
The appeal was unsuccessful, the judges considered that the parliamentary elections can be postponed, and the terms of senators and deputies can be extended for a maximum of three months, in case of emergency.
Subsequently, President Klaus Iohannis ordered that the normative act be returned to Parliament for further examination. The presidential approach aimed to postpone as much as possible the adoption of this normative act, so that it no longer has effects, and the elections must be organized within the deadline proposed by the Government, on December 6.
