President Klaus Iohannis declared this Tuesday, after the working meeting in Cotroceni, which was attended by the Minister of Health, Nelu Tătaru, the vice-president of the Romanian ATI Society, Dorel Săndesc, and the head of Section ATI I, of the Central University Hospital for Military Emergencies “Carol Davila” Bucharest, Dan Corneci, that in Romania there are currently 3,065 ATI beds, and the capacity of the health system will increase in the future by accessing European funds.

Statement from President Klaus Iohannis:

“The epidemiological situation both at the European and national level is unfortunately constantly getting worse and only on the last day we had more than 100 Romanians who lost the fight against the virus.

A very difficult period awaits us and sustained efforts are needed to keep the epidemic under control. The fight against the virus takes place on two fronts: on the one hand, in the area of prevention, through which we try to limit the transmission of the infection, and on the other hand, in hospitals, where patients with COVID-19 need specialized care and treatment. .

That is why I wanted to have an applied discussion with recognized experts in Intensive Care and the Minister of Health, who presented me with an analysis of resources of Intensive Care at the national level, ATI departments at the national level – and when we talk about resources, I mean both to beds equipped with specific equipment such as medical personnel.

The government has developed a strategy to increase intensive care capacity across the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

During all this time, the Ministry of Health has carried out several projects for the purchase of ventilators, monitors, beds and other necessary equipment for the Intensive Care Units, for which, at this moment, we have, according to reports from the departments of ATI, 3,065 Therapy beds. Intensive – for all patients, not just COVID, that is, a total of 3,065 beds – 2,252 mechanical ventilators, 2,756 monitors and a whole range of equipment purchased with various sources of funding.

To these are added five mobile intensive care units, two modular hospitals and an ATI module, with a total – these additional – of 169 beds.

Regarding only functional ATI fans, I will only give you an example, to understand how it worked: between April and October 2020, the increase in fan capacity nationwide was 73%, and by December another 15% are added, which means that, practically, since the beginning of the pandemic until now, the capacity of the fans has doubled!

The strategic plan for the next period foresees clear stages of implementation and aims to open new intensive care units distributed nationwide, such as those in Oradea, Constanța, Craiova, in newly built locations with Intensive Care Destinations or that will be transformed into pavilions. intensive care.

Here we also specifically request data on Bucharest. And here we will have, in seven hospitals, an expansion of the capacity of the Intensive Care Unit and I can tell you that in the next ten days we will have, in addition to what exists now, 123 Intensive Care Units.

For this reason, the authorities have acted and have clear and well-developed plans to ensure the necessary conditions in the Intensive Care Units for the care of patients in serious condition.

Therefore, accessing European funds through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) will further increase the capacity to manage the health crisis. Just for mechanical fans, for example, the increase from April 2020 to April 2021 will represent an increase of 146%, according to data provided to me by the specialists. It’s amazing!

After the analysis of the needs of the hospitals, the complete range of apparatus and equipment necessary to equip medical units will be acquired through specific procedures, again with European funds, from monitors, ventilators, beds, anesthesia machines, to devices. ultrasound and RT-PCR.

Accessing these funds will have an extremely important impact, we will have a significant increase in each of these indicators, the figures being precisely calculated by specialists.

For example, because we are talking about intensive care beds, 662 high-performance beds of this type have already been approved for financing through this program and will be made in the next period.

However, to stop the spread of the virus, we need the participation of all citizens. As much as the authorities take action, it will not be enough if we are not all part of this national effort to save as many lives as possible.

Thank you and I wish you all good health! “Said the president.
