Violent protests against restrictions in northern Italy. Angry mobs set fire and robbed luxury stores

The new anti-pandemic measures in Italy have sparked street protests in Turin and Milan. These escalated into clashes with the police and violent attacks by angry mobs, who threw firecrackers and other similar incandescent objects and attacked and robbed shops, reports The Guardian.

In the center of Turin, several luxury stores were destroyed and robbed at dusk. The police responded with tear gas, trying to disperse protest groups against the restrictions. The scene of similar clashes was the city of Milan, capital of the neighboring region, Lombardy, one of the most affected by the pandemic in its first wave.

Angry crowds chanted “Freedom” as they clashed with the police. These tensions and violent protests follow a wave of other, but peaceful, protests in several major cities in the country – in Treviso, Trieste, Rome, Naples, Salerno and Palermo. The Italian government has again forced the closure of bars and restaurants after 6 p.m. and the complete closure of gyms, cinemas and swimming pools in an attempt to control the second wave, which has caused significantly more illnesses than the first.
