Italy reported a record 19,644 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, and the government is considering introducing additional restrictions. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said he wants to avoid another episode of restrictions similar to those of the first part of the year. However, in some regions of the country the movement of people at night has been prohibited, and the government will soon decide what other measures will be applied at the national level, reports Mediafax.
Conte pledged on Saturday to speed up the aid program for companies affected by the crisis, but said the next few weeks will be extremely difficult. “We cannot lower our guard,” he added.
According to a draft decree, cited by Reuters, gyms and public swimming pools could be closed, and bars and restaurants could limit their hours to 6 p.m. Also, trips outside the home will not be encouraged.

The situation in Italy does not differ much from that of other European countries: people are dissatisfied with the restrictions that threaten the national economy, while the number of Covid-19 cases is not decreasing, but is growing faster. On Friday, hundreds of Naples residents gathered to protest the nightly quarantine.
Earlier this week, local governors called for restrictions on night traffic in Campania, Lombardy and Lazio, around the capital Rome. The city of Milan, severely affected by the coronavirus in the spring, recorded more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 on Saturday. The northern regions of Piedmont and southern Sicily are also on the list of authorities. New restrictions are expected in other regions of Italy.

Public health services are overburdened and officials have reopened temporary intensive care units built at the start of the pandemic. The death rate remains well below the previous level of more than 900 deaths per day, but has risen steadily, with 151 Covid-19 victims reported on Saturday.
