Emil Boc says that the construction of the Cluj metro will also use European funds from the 2021-2027 financial year. He announced that the pre-feasibility study had been completed. Thus, experts estimated that the 14.4-kilometer highway will cost almost a billion euros, and the execution time would be 11 years. In a first phase, the metro will cross a part of the city and will ensure the connection with the largest commune in the country, Floresti, a town with an estimated population of 70,000-80,000 inhabitants. Subsequently, the line will be extended to other locations in the Cluj metropolitan area.
“The pre-feasibility study of the metro is ready, it will be approved by the Floresti commune and presented to the Government. The development of the metropolitan area is very important in terms of the metro and the metropolitan train. 70,000 cars circulate on the Floresti-Cluj route in 24 hours, the metro will have a length of 14.4 km, 14 stations and a cost of 986 million euros. The duration of the implementation will be almost 11 years ”, says Emil Boc.
For comparison, in Bucharest, the 5 Râul Doamnei – Eroilor highway works cost 3.2 billion lei, but they are only 7 kilometers long, less than half of what the Cluj metro will be. Thus, the price paid per kilometer in Cluj would be 15% -20% lower.
Currently, Bucharest is the only city in Romania that has a metro. The only metro line built after the Revolution in Romania is the M5 Râul Doamnei – Eroilor, and the works lasted 9 years.
