The United States set a new daily record on Friday, with another 83,010 confirmed coronavirus cases, with the country struggling to cope with the second wave of the pandemic. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that very difficult months are coming and that some countries are on a dangerous slope.

American doctors cited by BBC News also warned that the number of hospitalizations is increasing. The good news is that the number of deaths is decreasing due to the fact that patients receive better medical care.

The latest daily report comes as pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson resumed testing for the Covid vaccine after receiving approval from regulators.

The World Health Organization has warned that the countries of the Northern Hemisphere are at a critical juncture. “The next few months will be extremely tough and some countries are on a dangerous slope,” Tedros CEO Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned at a news conference.

What does the total balance sheet look like in the US?

According to US authorities monitoring the situation, nearly 8.5 million Americans have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

The balance announced on Friday is 6,000 more than the previous record of 76,842 recorded on July 17. In the past week alone, the United States passed the threshold of 441,541 new infections, the largest increase per week since the end of July.

The number of people dying from Covid-19 has risen steadily over the past six days, but is significantly less than the peak of 2,000 deaths in April.
