Nagorno-Karabakh authorities said 874 local military personnel had died since September 27, in addition to 37 civilians. Azerbaijan claims 61 Azerbaijani civilians were killed and 291 wounded, but did not disclose the number of casualties among the military.

Putin also noted that the United States will help Russia mediate to find a solution to the conflict.

The two Caucasus countries have a long-standing dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region within Azerbaijani territory but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians. Although a ceasefire agreement was reached in 1994, Armenia and Azerbaijan are frequently accused of attacks in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the border between them.
