“People are fed up with Covid,” Trump said in a telephone conversation with members of his campaign team, as reported in the US press.
“People say: + leave us alone +. They are tired. They are tired of listening to Fauci and all those idiots,” he added, according to Politico.
Fauci “has been here for 500 years,” mocked the president of the 79-year-old expert, who enjoys international recognition and who heads the Institute for Infectious Diseases.
“If we had listened to him, we would have had 700,000 or 800,000 dead,” the president continued, but thanked that his dismissal would be counterproductive, near the presidential elections on November 3.
A week ago, the immunologist expressed his dissatisfaction with the use of his statements in a video clip of the Trump team related to the coronavirus.
“In nearly five decades of public service, I have never publicly endorsed any candidate,” he said, accusing his remarks of being taken out of context.
On several occasions, Dr. Fauci has tried to clarify or correct Trump’s often crude statements about the development of vaccines or treatments for Covid-19.
