Romanian tradition, stopped for the first time in history

For the first time in Romanian history, the authorities banned the Sumedru fire or the Sanmedru fire.

It is a Romanian tradition, two thousand years old. On the night of October 25-26, before the feast of Saint Demetrius (Dumitru), the defender of shepherds, bonfires are lit and young people gather around him. The custom is still preserved in the towns of the counties: Argeș, Dâmbovița, Vâlcea or Călărași.

On the eve of the holiday, on the night of October 25, the Sânmedru Fire is celebrated in Călărași county, when people often light bonfires in courtyards or hills, over which children jump to be healthy and young people to get marry. Older women, especially those in rural areas, tend to distribute pretzels, nuts, apples, bread, grapes, and prunes to everyone who jumps on the fire.

The Fire of Sânmedru thus becomes a celebration of the whole community, having in the foreground a defining moment, the Fire of Sânmedru, is a scene of death and rebirth of nature in the balance between October 25 and 26.

The funerary character of fire, in a specific ritual vigil, seems to have its roots in archaic times as ancestor worship to gain goodwill to ensure a fertile and rich harvest year.

Spread everywhere in Argeș, the custom is less conserved in the flat region and is better conserved in the mountainous areas. Although some customs have not been preserved and some fire-making techniques have been modernized, the unitary spirit of the festival has been preserved.

By making a fire as beautiful as possible, each group, whether adults or children, has its place well established. The ultimate goal is to light the most beautiful fire in the hills, to be seen as far as possible in the distance. This holiday continues to be an occasion of joy for the locals, who bring a gift of appreciation in front of the rich gifts of autumn, reports folkclor-romanesc.ro.
