The consolidation works of the historic Miţa Biciclista building in Amzei Square, carried out by the Spanish group Mantor, have been completed and the investment amounts to 4.5 million euros.
According to the company, hundreds of people participated in the consolidation work, from all specialties: structure, facade, ventilated facade of the new building, electricians, plumbers, plasterers, stonemasons, earthenware, parquet, those who restored the doors and windows. wood, those who repaired the cornices.
“I had no experience in similar work. I had a lot of experience in new construction, but I had never done a restoration. And here we are not talking about any restoration, but about the restoration of a protected building, a historical monument, with a facade full of details and sculptures. In a word, it was art. We used to work with workers and here we had to work with artists. We were forced to preserve every detail of the original house. So the location was ultra-central, with difficult access for a construction site. construction. The house is located next to the French Embassy, so there were additional restrictions. We also had to dismantle a body behind the building. We did it brick by brick, “said Tomas Manjon, co-founder of Mantor.
The Miţa Biciclista building on Amzei square was built at the beginning of the 20th century, with an Art Nouveau façade, according to a project by the architect Nicolae C. Mihăescu and renovated in 1980. The building, declared an architectural monument in the Baroque style, remained a symbol from the Capital due to the notoriety of Maria Mihaiescu, a famous courtesan and the first woman in Bucharest to ride a bicycle, according to journalistic sources.
Interwar Pistol Found Hidden
“The restoration involved a kind of time travel through which we brought a building abandoned for years back to life. The architect was Ms Constanţa Carp, whose experience in such projects was of enormous importance. I also encountered some unforeseen situations. When you build a house from scratch, you know what steps to take. Now I practically dismantled the whole house to strengthen the resistance structure and then put everything back together. There were also nice surprises, like the moment I found an interwar period pistol hidden among the bricks. The building is a true miracle and it was a pleasure to work on it. We repair what the time had ruined ”, Tomas Manjon also specified.
The consolidation works of the Miţa Biciclista house were developed in two phases: the first, of structure and part of the facilities, lasted two years, and the second, of finishes and the rest of the facilities, lasted another year and two. months. The building came back to life and all the architectural details that gave it the status of a “work of art” of Bucharest were respected.
