The coronavirus remains active on the skin for nine hours, according to Japanese researchers, who confirm the need for frequent hand washing in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike the coronavirus, the flu-causing pathogen survives on the skin for about 1.8 hours, according to a study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, according to AFP.

“The nine-hour survival of SARS-CoV-2 on human skin may increase the risk of contact transmission compared to influenza A virus, thus accelerating the pandemic,” the study reads, writes news.ro .

Japanese researchers analyzed skin samples taken from autopsy specimens about a day after death. The coronavirus and influenza virus are rendered inactive within 15 seconds by applying ethanol, which is used in hand sanitizers.

“Longer survival of SARS-CoV-2 in the skin increases the risk of contact transmission, but hand hygiene may reduce the risk,” the study noted.
