The history and geography teacher beheaded on Friday in the Paris region of Conflans Sainte-Honorine had received threats in the previous days, after showing his students cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, writes the BBC, citing the French press. The attacker is an 18-year-old Russian of Chechen origin who had received a residence permit in France in March.
The 47-year-old teacher was named Samuel Paty and he taught history and geography at the school in Conflans Sainte-Honorine, a commune in the suburbs of Paris, about 25 km northwest of the center of the French capital.
He was beheaded on the street Friday afternoon by an attacker who was later shot and killed by police. The moments of horror were captured by a witness who was at a safe distance from the crime scene.
The attacker was 18 years old and had received a refugee permit in March.
Police say the attacker, who was carrying a kitchen knife, is an 18-year-old man of Chechen origin. He was chased by the police in the street and, not wanting to surrender, becoming even threatening, they shot him. The attacker allegedly shouted “Allah Akbar” (Allah is the greatest) when he attacked the teacher.
The author of the murder, born on March 12, 2002 in Moscow, “was the holder of a residence permit issued on March 4 and valid until March 2030 (…). Of Russian nationality and Chechen origin, he benefited from refugee status “, declared this Saturday the National Anti-terrorist Prosecutor’s Office. Jean-François Ricard at a press conference, according to Agerpres.
“He was a stranger to the intelligence services,” added Ricard, who added that the perpetrator was known to the police for crimes under common law, without ever having been convicted.
The young man lived in Evreux, in another apartment; Prosecutor Jean-François Ricard did not say if the killer had ever attended Bois d’Aulne College in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, where he was teaching 47-year-old Professor Samuel Paty, who was a victim of him.
Among other things, Ricard confirmed that nine people were in custody, including the father of a student who had a dispute with the teacher over the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that he had shown in class.
The attack comes as the trial for the attacks on Charles Hebdo and the Hyper Cacher supermarket in January 2015 continues in a special court in Paris. In a statement, the satirical weekly expressed Friday night “its feeling of horror and revolt after a teacher in the exercise of his profession was assassinated by a religious fanatic.” “Religious intolerance has just crossed a new threshold and does not seem to back down at anything to impose its terror on our country,” continues Charlie Hebdo.
